Schooley Mitchell Spotlight Hyperion Sensors
Hyperion Sensors: Transitioning to the Power Grid of the Future
In May of 2023, Anselm Viswasam stood on Mount Kilimanjaro. The view was breathtaking, but Anselm was still more impressed by the results Hyperion had achieved in the past eight years.
“First, we climbed the startup mountain, developing a new technology and having it accepted by a very discerning customer base, and then I climbed Kilimanjaro!” Anselm explained.
Anselm is the co-founder and CEO of Hyperion Sensors. Founded in 2015, along with co-founder and CTO, Gerald Manuelpillai, the pair combined their decades of knowledge working with power grids and aerospace technologies to develop an AI-enabled, fiber optic monitoring system for the “Smart Grid” of the future.
Due to grid modernization, climate change, and planning to meet demand 20-30 years in advance, utilities need reliable data surrounding the performance of their existing assets and future expansion capabilities. This is where Hyperion comes in.
Hyperion Sensors’ solutions provide 24/7 monitoring of key grid assets. Combined with their cloud and AI-based analytics, utilities can determine real-time status and available capacity, and obtain predictive failure and lifecycle data. The system collects and analyzes data pertaining to the physical conditions of an asset complementing existing electrical information.
Hyperion and Schooley Mitchell share the same goal: helping clients find significant cost savings. Utilities stand to save significant capital and operating costs, by ‘right sizing’ future expansions, avoiding high costs associated with unplanned failures, as well as by getting more ‘juice’ out of existing assets.
Hyperion’s sector experience and highly utility-focused approach has been effective at allowing them to gain access to this normally restrictive and challenging market. This has been demonstrated by the fact that the company has won several innovation awards in the utility sector.
Hyperion’s team is small, but world class – a diverse and experienced group of employees. Anselm says, “Because I have them, I know there’s nothing we cannot do.” Hyperion has been driven by their clients and their excitement around the potential of the solution and the intuitive solutions that they continue to develop.
Looking to the future, Hyperion is confident their Helios Asset Performance solution will be the default choice for all electric utilities, and that their AI enabled cloud platform will be the central hub for all asset condition data throughout the power grid. This vision guides the company as they begin ramping up their deployment and expanding their clientele.
